An over-crowded home storage space.

Have you ever gone to the trouble of renting a storage space only to find that it’s not large enough to hold the items you want to store? It can be frustrating and time-consuming to reload your items into another, larger storage unit because of an error in judgement.

Our storage unit guide will offer tips on renting the correctly sized unit for your belongings, making self-storage a simple, easy and more exacting exercise.

What Size Storage Unit Do I Need?

Most people think of their belongings individually. However, the MeSpace self-storage units in Bangkok, Pattaya and Phuket use the floor area in square meters as the basis for our rental rates. Our units from XXS to XXL all have a ceiling height of 2.7 meters and various floor areas between 1 sqm and 50 sqm.

This means that you shouldn't think of your items individually but think of the total area that your collective items will occupy in arriving at the proper unit size to rent.

The first step is to determine how many cubic feet of storage space you’ll need. To do that, you'll need to take a proper inventory of your belongings, including each of their measurements.

Inventory and Measure Your Belongings

Make storing things easier with a storage unit size guide

Measure the height, width and depth of each item and multiply them together to get the total cubic meters of each item. Then, add these totals together to get the total cubic area of storage space you need to rent.

Smartphone apps such as AR Ruler and RoomScan Pro can make measuring your room volume needs simple. MeSpace will soon introduce a Size Estimator that will also take the guesswork out of planning your storage space needs.

Using 2.7 meters as a maximum ceiling height, you can then work out how much floor space your belongings will require. For example, if your belongings totalled 12 cubic meters (2 x 2 x 3), you could rent a 1.9 x 2.0 x 2.7-meter small storage space and still be under 12 cubic meters.

You can spend some time trying to figure out the most efficient use of a given space by how you arrange and pack the items. However, don't pack a storage space too tightly if you need to access stored items in the future.

Another alternative is to rent two storage spaces. This way, you can keep your long-term storage items separate from items you need to access frequently.

Don’t Try for Perfection

To keep this exercise from becoming a mathematics nightmare, you only need to get close measurements, not perfect ones. The truth is that renting a storage space is like an instant opportunity to rid your home of all the things you thought you needed to have with you.

If you plan on renting self-storage space slightly larger than the items you need to store, you’ll fill up the extra space in no time.

Why Might You Need a Storage Unit?

Having a number of family members visit may suddenly present the perfect reason why you need a storage space. A storage space solves the problem of temporarily storing luggage, cots and bedding. They can provide the storage that makes a home with extra people livable again. MeSpace Self Storage also provides a luggage storage and delivery service.

Also, extensive home renovations taking several weeks or months means household items become obstacles that create congestion without a dedicated place to store them. A self-storage unit provides an immediate solution to a temporarily crowded home.

There’s also a hybrid work/home trend, where people work from home. Renting a storage space allows you to easily rearrange your home to be more spacious and productive as a workspace while keeping your belongings safe and secure.

Ensure You’ve Maximized Your Home Storage Options

If you’re renting a storage space simply to create more space in your home, use the tips in our storage unit size guide to ensure that you’ve made the most of the space available in your home before renting more. Get in the habit of carrying a tape measure and measuring the cubic size of your long-term storage items to consolidate them and make the storage unit work for you as long as possible.
